Chess Instruction in the Schools

School Programs

Classes are one hour:

  • The first 30 minutes are for chess instruction:
    • Instruction is organized.
    • Specific topics and strategies are covered.
  • The last 30 minutes the students play chess games:
    • The first chess game is a tournament game – students are awarded points towards trophies and prizes based on the results of the game.

    • After the tournament game students can play fun games until class is over.

All materials are provided.

All levels of chess skill are accepted.  The class is divided into groups (such as Standard, Intermediate, and Advanced) based on age and ability.

We maintain an average Student-Teacher ratio of 12 to 1.

Program Schedule

Know Chess! is an after-school program.  All chess classes are held after school.

Chess classes are held one day every week (with the exception of school holidays, and "min" days).

We also offer classes through the City of Fremont Recreation Department. Register online!

Instructors

All instructors are carefully screened and background checked.

Emphasis is placed on the instructor’s ability to work well with children.

We pride ourselves on building a team of leaders who enjoy working with children, as well as, a love for the game of chess.  Learn more about joining our team.

Fees

The average cost to the parent(s) is $12 for each chess class, payable per semester and scholarships are readily available for those with a financial need...

Our program is aligned with the school year calendar.  We divide the school year into two semesters.  For example:  a 34-week school year is divided into two 17-week Know Chess! semesters, for a cost of $204 per semester.

"Thank you for your generosity during the past year in providing scholarships to participate in your chess classes.  The chess classes were well-organized and well-run, despite their large size, and the end-of-year trophies surprised and delighted [student name] in how nice they were made.  Thank you again and have a wonderful summer."
